Nagaland Board

The Nagaland Board of School education is also known as the NBSE. This Board started functioning on 1st October, 1974 following an Act introduced by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Since its inception, the Board has spread its functioning rapidly, and achieved a praiseworthy reputation. It conducted its first High School Leaving Certificate Exam in March, 1975. This first exam was regulated at six centres of this Board, and almost 2008 candidates appeared for that exam. Based on the state's demands the Board made its first curriculum and it was approved by the state Government on 12th April 1979.

To get a reputed identification, the Board organized a couple of workshops, seminars, study tours, trainings and other initiatives. The Board also assessed a well defined syllabus which was required to maintain the quality of education. These measures have greatly strengthened the Board and established its academic credentials.

Today, the Board conducts the HSLC exams for class10th and HSSLC exams for class 12th. The Board evaluates the syllabus and conducts some research before prescribing text books for class IX and X.

The well-framed curriculum for class IX and X were introduced in 1981 and 1982. The Board brought about praiseworthy development in the HSLC exams by imparting centrally coded answer books. This has allowed the Board to maintain a centralized evaluation process. In 1988, the Board bifurcated the HSLC exam and introduced a separate class 9 promotion exam and HSLC exam.. The first class IX (promotion) exam was conducted in 1988. Supplementary exams were also introduced by this Board.

Additionally, the Board conducts the class XI promotion examination, National Talent Search Test ( State Level) and Joint Entrance examination for students who prefer getting into a technical field. This JEE exam was started in 1994 to give a basic platform for medical and technical studies. The Board has introduced a unique aspect to this exam. Here the candidate can do a self evaluation, and put their secured marks in the carbon copy of the scoring sheet. Students are allowed to inform the Board about any discrepancy which happens during the examination. This Process brings an appreciable change in the exam pattern.

All Examinations are generally conducted at the selected centres, and the Board monitors the exam process and publishes results through the print media, gazette and the Internet. Due to the conducive administrative process, the exams are smoothly regulated by the Board. Moreover, scholarships are also provided under different schemes. It encourages students, and economically supports needy candidates as well.

The Board provides recognition to schools and also regulates the exams conducted at the school campus. The Board sets the question papers and monitors the entire exam process. The Board publishes results after completion of each academic year, and additionally, it evaluates the examination process and adopts the necessary steps to make the entire process trustworthy. The Board maintains the educational record for each student, and provides the pass certificates to students.


Followed by the NBSE Act 1990, the Board started the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Exam offering three streams Arts, Science and Commerce.The Board carries a well maintained academic structure with different sectors including the examination, administration, accounts and others. Each particular department successfully manages the functioning of its specific section through efficient officials. The Board competently supervises its jurisdiction that includes the entire state of Nagaland.
